It feels like it was just yesterday when the 23rd edition of the Calypso Cricket Festival rolled out in December 2013. Thousands of children looked forward to an educational and fun-filled 5 days on the beautiful and serene beaches of the Western Cape. This proved to be the perfect way to kick off the festive season for the eager participants. So much action and activity unfolded throughout that week –with appearances by popular sportsmen as well as renowned politicians.
The support meant a great deal to the Sporting Chance Team and provided us with a sense of validation for the work we do and the vision we have. Talent identification remained a core element of the week-long initiative: and boy the talent was in abundance!
Fast-forward to a month later and four boys, through the Sporting Chance Development Foundation Bursary initiative, are now attending the Western Cape Sports School. 3 weeks into their new life at the sport-focused school: Aphiwe Lepotso, Simo Madela, Siphelo Witbooi and Wandile Mbekeni are now settling into a new routine and are even more determined than ever to make the most of the opportunity.
The Sporting Chance team paid the four boys a visit and found them engaged right in the middle of a training session. “Settling in was hard in the first week but we are now understanding the way of life here and have even started making friends”, remarked an eager Aphiwe. This experience has certainly impacted the four boys positively and we can only hope that this is the beginning of a new venture that will go a long way in establishing future sporting heroes.
