ADAPT OR DIE: CATCHING A KID’S CURRENCY

We have read some thought-provoking opinions and heard interesting discussion on the matter of sport transformation in South Africa over the past few months.  Sporting Chance has been a part of some of these.  All, or most, have attempted to explain the progress in transforming the country, where we have failed, the successes, and how we can steer things in the right direction.

We know it’s “easier” to produce the best where the circumstances are ideal, but in a relatively young democracy still caught up in  the blame game (while many children fall through the cracks), it is also important to take stock of the fact that for the majority “ideal” is pie in the sky.

The rather dramatic adage “adapt or die” comes to mind – we need to be sensitive to the varied quirks of society’s children.  More effort will need to be put in to catch the attention of some of our young ones; more time and money will have to be spent to maximise the potential that is out there; much more, possibly, than what we had bargained for.  Simply put – we have to catch a kid’s currency…at their level, and make it work.

If not, the “downward spiral of society” so often spoken about will continue.
