Some time before the buses arrived and the first call from an anxious coordinator rang out at the Sporting Chance offices.
“The buses are on their morning rounds, Beauty. They’ll come shortly after,” we reassured the coordinator.
Not fifteen minutes later, again before the scheduled time of departure – another call from Beauty. This time, “Please tell the bus driver to liaise with me about when he’s coming.”
This might turn out to be a long morning…
Talking to her on the beach a short while later she is apologetic about the calls. Why should she be though? A dedicated community leader, Beauty is the epitome of what we look for from our coaches and coordinators. She is committed to the children in her community, wanting only the best for them. That she is willing to spend her own money to make sure their needs are met is testament to where her heart lies.
She is not alone in this. For the 22 years that Sporting Chance has run Calypso Cricket, we have come across true community champions. When we watch the children on the beach we know it takes a huge effort to gather them, and then to take care of them. Some are a handful, but these community leaders take it in their stride, keeping a tight rein on things.
It is less about us and what we do, than it is about them and what they do. Calypso Cricket stands, after so many years, because of them.
