As always there was great anticipation for the annual Sporting Chance Bishops U12 Day/Night Hockey Festival which took place on Friday 7th September. Organised by former Olympic hockey player and now Bishops master, Murray Anderson the tournament has become one of the premier outings on the hockey calendar, and boys and girls schools from around the southern suburbs clamber for an invite.
Involving over 200 participants the tournament focuses on the U12 age group, providing the teams with the perfect platform to show their skills in the half field format of the game. The first rounds of the girls matches were played at Western Province Cricket Club astro before the teams joined the boys at Bishops for the semis and finals. The atmosphere was electric with hundreds of spectators cheering on the sidelines and the teams very excited to play under lights.
All the semi-finals and finals were nail biters with Springfield and Rustenburg contesting and the girl’s finals and Bishops and Rondebosch the boys. In the end it was Springfield and Bishops that emerged victorious to claim the coveted trophies.
Having recently returned from the London Olympics, former Rondebosch old boy, Sporting Chance coach and current SA international Andrew Cronje attended to inspire the youngsters and hand over the prizes to the respective winners:
Boys winners: Bishops
Boys runners-up: Rondebosch Boys
Girls winners: Springfield
Girls runners-up: Rustenburg Girls
Boys Top goal scorer: Ross Stone from Rondebosch Boys
Girls Top goal scorer: India Harding from Springfield
Thanks to our Sporting Chance sponsors for their support of this event and specifically to Sportsmans Warehouse and TK hockey for supplying the wonderful prizes.
