It was a true David versus Goliath battle when four-time champions, the e.tv Eternals, lined up against debutants, the Cape Cricket Vikings, in the final of the 16th Foodzone Inter Media Cricket Challenge at the XtraSpace Bellville Cricket Club on Sunday.
The Vikings had to steel their nerves en route to the final, defeating the Independent Deadly Deadlines and the Good Hope fm Wicket DJs in the day’s second bowl off, thanks to a magnificent hat trick from the ever-green Gavin Arends. The three teams had played themselves to the knockout stage with three wins off their four matches, the Helderberg Heroes and SABC Shakers placing fourth and fifth respectively. It was a similar situation in Pool A as the Hectic Hammers and the Hashim Amla-inspired Top Billing Tough Team finished bottom of the table while the Eternals, the Expresso Rebels and the Good Hope fm Masters ended their group tied on six points apiece. It took some measured bowling from Linton Phillips to take e.tv to the final as he was the only bowler in their play-off to hit the wickets.
Alas, it wasn’t for the underdog to take the title as the Eternals, needing seven off the final over for victory, reached their target of 51 with 4 balls to spare, lifting the Foodzone Inter Media Cricket for a record fifth time…but what a debut by the Vikings!
