“Soccer is dangerous, but it’s fun!” Sophia remarked as she mock hobbled off after a quick break. The sprightly ten-year old had had a run-in with someone’s studs during clinics a few days earlier, but was not perturbed by this, continuing with her chosen sport.
Sophia is one of a handful of girls signed up for soccer, adding a fresh dynamic to the coaching clinics. Hockey has traditionally been the domain of the girls, but we have seen a pleasing increase in the number of them trying out other sport. The soccer girls aren’t the only ones as Olivia proved – finding herself with bat in hand, as she took a stab at cricket.
All this happens in the same week as the national women’s cricket team notch up a commanding lead against the West Indies in the Caribbean. Perhaps some of the magic from the older girls is rubbing off on the young ones? We hope time will tell!
