JUNIOR HOCKEY STARS SPARKLE UNDER LIGHTS

Friday 5th September, played host to the annual Sporting Chance Bishops u12 Day/Night Hockey Tournament. Aspiring young players from the top girls and boys schools of the Southern Suburbs gathered for the much anticipated event. The tournament, which is a highlight on these youngsters hockey calendar didn’t disappoint and the passion, camaraderie and skills displayed were fantastic.

The Bishops pedigree was evident with former SA hockey international Murray Anderson and his passionate Bishops team in charge ensuring that this hockey showpiece was presented to the utmost standard.

Involving over 200 participants, the tournament focuses on the u12 age group, providing the teams with the perfect platform to show their skills in the half field format of the game. The first rounds of the girls matches were played at Herschel astro before the teams joined the boys at Bishops for the semis and finals.  The atmosphere was electric with hundreds of spectators cheering on the sidelines and the teams super excited to play under lights. The crew from SuperSport Let’s Play will also on hand to film the action, which added extra incentive to perform.

The tournament was tightly contested with many matches drawn throughout the day. ‘Extra time’ and ‘showdowns’ became the order of the evening and after intense competition it was Springfield and St. Cyprians in the girls final, and Bishops and Reddam in the boys. In the end it was St. Cyprians taking the girls title for the first time and Bishops retaining the boys’ title.
