Khayelitsha will be the main talking point on Friday. Not only is the community the defending KIA Street Soccer Champion, but (and to celebrate this), they will also host the official launch of the 4th annual KIA Street Soccer Tournament. To be held at Ummangaliso Primary School, this year’s KIA Street Soccer league promises much of the talent and flair of previous years, while also looking ahead to what could be, as the world waits with bated breath for 2014.
The tournament celebrates local talent, but with just a year to the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is this the year when we see a Samba-infused style of play, as we complete the transition from one football-loving nation to another?
The league is but one aspect of the programme, and comes two months after the start of the first two phases, where educational road shows were held for the players and coaches. This can never take off without our various sponsors and partners. Some assist with the road shows, others with the league, and still others with the overall project. Some help get the message out there; others assist with the training of the coaches while others help fill the tums of our players.
