STREET SOCCER COMMUNITIES OWNING THEIR STREETS

KIA Street Soccer is a programme aimed at empowering communities to take ownership of their streets.  In communities riddled with high levels of inactivity, it is all too easy to fall by the wayside.  To have them involved in this programme means they take the streets into their own hands, to ensure they have alternatives.

On a visit to one community we find students from the Oral Robert University’s soccer team officiating.  The students are visiting South Africa for four weeks and made contact with one of our coordinators as they were looking for opportunities to meet and work with people from our communities.

Another community uses matriculants as coaches.  In areas with rising unemployment and poverty, to give them the opportunity to acquire some basic work-related skills early on in life will set them up well for the future.

This is part of what the programme is about…communities making decisions for themselves and taking responsibility to affect their future.
