The Sporting Chance Development Foundation once again hit the road, heading to Elsies River’s Norwood Sentraal Primary School for a handover of cricket pads on Tuesday 7th February.
As part of the foundation’s kit donation, schools and clubs that are in need of equipment are targeted for these handovers. This need was summed up accurately by Martina Erasmus, a cricket coach at the school, who said more learners would now be encouraged to play when they see the pads. “They were so excited [when they heard about the donation], they told more friends to stay behind,” she added.
Equally pleased with the hand-over was NPS principal Chris Mathys who lauded the opportunities this would open up for the learners. “This will give them confidence…to look forward to representing their school and maybe even one day their country.” He acknowledged that the pads they used previously were too thin, so these would give them the confidence to play the game in proper equipment.
The learners themselves were visibly enthused, anxiously awaiting our arrival. There was an air of delight as they tried out their new gear, chatting excitedly with each other as the pads went on one leg and then the other.
