The KIA Street Soccer has reached an exhilarating stage, three provincial champion titles have been bagged and so much activity has unfolded in the different provinces.
On Tuesday we were greeted with sunshine, as the Sporting Chance team started setting up for the day’s activities in Port Elizabeth. Songololo Street in Walmer Township provided us with much fanfare on Tuesday, and with the Mille helium ball and the Mille soccer freestylers in place by 2pm, the street was a hive of activity as the anticipation of the provincial finals’ kick-off reached fever pitch.
Spectators came out in numbers, showing such authentic support for their peers and fellow residents. Mothers came out to see their children in action, displaying their excitement by singing traditional tunes and Ululating. These are the type of images that are synonymous with KIA Street Soccer, the display of our culturally diverse and beautiful society.
Games proceeded between the different regions, till the semi-final rounds which proved to be incredibly intense and competitive. With every province that is visited, one common factor always arises; the passion that each and every one of these young participants possesses.
The final battle was between the City Lads who reside in New Brighton and the Young Idols who originate from Veeplaas. A tight and intense game was witnessed, but in the end, New Brighton’s ‘City Lads’ played tremendously well, winning the match 2-1.
They deserved to bag the title and walked away proudly carrying and displaying their trophy, Mille prizes and ProNutro tog bags, and certainly looked more than ready to face their competitors on the 14th of September at the national finals.
To wrap up an action-packed day, Mcdonalds saved the day by providing refreshments and food for all the young participants.
